Tracy's Super Trellis

Reader Project — Tracy’s Trellis!

Tracy from the DFW area of Texas recently sent us this photo and a very nice note thanking us for our Super Sturdy Trellis instruction page.  We think it looks fantastic, and is an excellent example of how the trellis can be customized to fit just about any situation.

The trellis is in front of a kitchen window (nice and large if you ask us).  Netting wasn’t available locally so Tracy used clothesline in a very clever way.  At the bottom of the photo it looks like the bed was prepared with quality soil in preparation for planting.  Excellent job!

Tracy reports, “The frame took less than 10 minutes.  The trellis took about an hour.  Each line is cut, then the ends burned, a zip tie attached and a dab of Gorilla glue to keep it in place.  The lines are placed 7” apart.  The U-posts and installation took another 20 minutes (it took us a few times).  Total construction time is about an hour and a half with two people working on it.”  Total cost was just over $40, with the clothesline being the largest expense at $17.

Tracy says, “Can’t wait to see the stuff start crawling up!”  That stuff includes Loofah, Peas, Green Beans and Cucumbers!  All good choices, and to have a view of it from the kitchen window should help inspire many an excellent meal we would think.  We are especially interested in how the Loofah works out because it is borderline for being grown in our area and we’ve not tried it yet.

Tracy’s next garden project is to increase the number of raised beds from 2 to 5.  She has promised to keep us updated as the trellis begins to fill in, so stay tuned!

How inspiring in creativity and expense. The green folige will probably look suspended in space and be more eye catching without the standard wooden Trellis.
Thanks Tracy for sharing

@ Cecile — Thank you for the comment! Last year in the vegetable garden it was neat to see this wall of green seemingly hovering in the middle of the garden. Especially from a distance it really catches the eye.

Very original! I like the fact that this is not so overbearing like a wooden trellis is, it is almost invisible unless you look right at it. Great thought process….

@ Susan — Thank you for commenting. Not only almost invisible but also unbelievably strong. We used commercial nylon netting on ours and that stuff simply will not break!
