A couple days ago the grass in the garden paths was mowed as short as the mower would go. Then the edges of each bed were weeded by hand and any overhanging plants were cut back. Ade (thank you!) and I then spent an easy hour or so cutting and placing landscape fabric over all the paths and around the garden edges.
The big issue is along the far side of the garden where the melons/gourds/winter squash is growing. The vines in that area are literally going everywhere, and I feared if they were pruned back enough to place the fabric it might kill the plants. So a decision was made to let that part of the garden just grow wild and see what happens.
As a result, since the entire garden isn’t covered in landscape fabric yet I’m going to hold off on the gravel until September or so when I can get the vines pulled out. This isn’t optimal by any stretch, but I feel it makes the most sense to do the entire garden at once. Plus it will be substantially cooler in the fall — a bonus for a well-insulated person such as myself!
And now that I sit here thinking about it — Sept. or Oct. would be the best time to edge the beds with wood like I plan to do. Then the gravel can be placed and the garden will look slick.
